Expanding the Growing Space

First, the 10 beds and paths were staked out and marked. This added approximately 1,000 square feet to the flower farm. (In the background is Old Blue, who was born in 1984 and joined the family 2 years later. He always starts, never complains, and tackles every job with enthusiasm.)

Then, geo-textile fabric was laid over the beds and fastened down. This, we hoped, would kill the grass and weeds, eliminating the need for spraying while encouraging earth worms to move in and work their magic. And yes, it worked! Soil, compost, and mulch will be added later, and then a cover crop seeded.
